If you are a spammer or Internet marketer, please refer to the Definition of Spam for the type of emails that SORBS considers spam.

The following sections deal with each type of listing in more detail.

Open Relays and Proxies

Information in the open proxy and relay databases, are statements of fact for a given time and address by SORBS. All other entries are based upon suspicion and/or opinion of the SORBS administrators, unless otherwise stated. SORBS is of the opinion that all entries created by the SORBS administrators are correct at the time of publishing. If you have been listed as a proxy server or open relay and would like to be retested, please refer to the Proxy/Open Retest Relay FAQ.

Spam, Spammers and Escalated

If you are listed in the 'spammers' database, it is because you, your machine, or a previous user of the address sent unsolicited bulk, commercial, religious or political email to one of the administrators of SORBS or any of the spam traps SORBS operates. You will only be removed from the SORBS database at the discretion of the SORBS and/or the administrator who had to deal with the spam that was sent.  Please read the Spam Database FAQ for more information.

Usage Listings (DUHL, Static, CoLo etc)

If you have a usage classification listing it is because staff at SORBS (See note below), your ISP, the previous network owner, or automated systems have identified your network space as a specific type of usage. Usage types are:

  • DUHL entries: Dynamically Allocated hosts/networks (your IP is not fixed - even if you have kept the IP for over a year)
  • exDUHL entries: Exclusions to the DUHL (small networks of less than 256 IPs)
  • Cable entries: You are using a cable modem or DSL to connect (Regardless as to Static/Dynamic, Business/Residential)
  • UnAllocated entries: Network space is currently unused.
  • CoLo entries: Network space is reserved for Co-located hosts.
  • MailServer entries: ISP and Large corporation (incoming and outgoing) mail servers (Large is more than 1000 staff or more than 10,000 ISP customers) - Individual IPs unless its Google/Hotmail etc.
  • Residential entries: IP/Networks reserved exclusively for people on residential class connections (Both Static and Dynamic)
  • Business entries: IP/Networks that are exclusivly for use by people paying for business connections (Both Static and Dynamic)
  • Static entries: IP/Networks that are statically allocated (hosts will *always* have the same IP and cannot be changed without manual intervention by the ISP/hoster)
  • NoServers entries: IP/Networks that cannot/must not host any type of email server.
  • CoreNetwork entries: IP/Networks used for Core Networking (eg: Routers/Switches/ISP DNS Servers - no mail servers at all!)
More than one usage can apply to a specific IP address or Network, eg: You could be listed as Residential, Dynamic, NoServers, which means you are a residential class customer with a dynamic IP allocation and by your ISP policy/contract you are not permitted to run an email server (even as a hobby.)

Note: SORBS Staff only update Static/Dynamic and DUHL Exclusions lists, if you are listed in any other classification it is because your ISP or the previous network owner updated the range. Only network owners can change listings that have previously been set by network owners - these are marked as such in the SORBS Support System as "Immutable" and you will not be allowed to lodge a ticket against such a listing.

Zombie Networks

If you are in the Zombie Netblock space, you are using IP space of which, in SORBS' opinion, you are not the rightful owner. You are welcome to submit any information to persuade the administrators that you are the rightful owner, but please understand it is the sole discretion of the administrators of SORBS as to whether the information is adequate for removal. Suitable information is usually an email from the responsible Regional Internet Registry (RIR) indicating that you are confirmed as the rightful owner of any network. If you have purchased the network from a former employer, you will be asked to show detail that a legal transaction occurred. Please refer to the Zombie Netblock FAQ for more information.

In the event that your ISP has issued the listed address space to you, you will need to resolve the issue directly with your ISP. SORBS does not get involved in disputes between an ISP and their customer.
